What is CMMS?

A CMMS, or Computerised Maintenance Management Software, maintains a computerised database of Asset, Inventory, and Labour information within an organisation.  This information is designed to help maintenance workers manage their maintenance more effectively by being able to see all the information about an asset in the one location.  This includes parts that are used on that asset, as well as which Stock Room these parts are kept and how many are currently on-hand in that Stock Room.  This data is often also used to help verify Statutory Regulation compliance.

In capital-intensive industries like Oil & Gas, Process/Discrete Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Resort/Hotels, physical assets (buildings, infrastructure, and equipment) form a large proportion of the total assets within an organisation.  These industries deal with highly valued assets and equipment where each failure can be very costly and results in disruption to the business.  It is for these reasons that an organisation must be able to effectively manage the maintenance of their assets.
